The Palace is called Ca' Bernardi, meaning the house of Bernardi, and was owned by the Bernardi family of Giudecca. This family was quite wealthy and dealt in selling pigments.
We know that the main building was built in the middle of the 15th century. It boasts an architectural layout aptly named a "T" shape, with one long horizontal salon and three long vertical halls.
The courtyard was once an open space that led to the canal. The area under the main building held the family livestock. The enormity of the palace and private water well was an indication of the wealth of the Bernardi family.
In the late 17th century, a second wing of the palace was built, closing off the courtyard from the canal. The Bernardi family lost the property when the remaining family member had no heirs to inherit.
In the courtyard on the wall of the B&B, there are the remains of an alfresco painting that probably decorated the entire facade.
